BANDA ACEH, (TAG) – Aceh police chief, Ins. Gen. Iskandar Hasan, said Wednesday that
the latest shooting occurred in east Aceh district over the weekend no relating to the
coming local polls, as it’s believed to be personal matters.

On Sunday
evening, Asnawi Abdul Rahman’s house in Peureulak sub-district of east Aceh fired
by unidentified gunmen. No one injured in the incident as Asnawi’s family
was not at home on that night.
Asnawi is a
campaign team of Aceh gubernatorial candidate Irwandi Yusuf in the area. He’s known as a former Free Aceh
Movement (GAM) fighter. After peace agreement reached between GAM and Indonesia government in 2005 to end almost 30 year armed conflict in the province,
he became as the contractor businessman.
According
to local police earlier, some four suspects which covering their faces, approached the house by
riding two motorcycles. The penetrators stood outside the fence and began firing at the empty house that suffered minor damages.
Asnawi was also known as former spokesman of Aceh
Transitional Committee (KPA) in Peureulak area. Residents told local journalists that
they heard some 20 shootings that caused residents’ afraid to go out as the
incident took place at around 8:30 p.m.
“The
shooting’s a warning given to the victim because he was asked to pay his debts
many times,” Iskandar said, adding that police still investigating to find the
penetrators.
Iskandar
believed the shooting was pure crime and was not linked to the local
polls to choose governor, four mayors and 13 districts' chief that scheduled April 9. “Based on the investigation led to personal matters,
so it’s not related to the coming elections,” he said.
Iskandar mentioned
that Aceh province is still a safe place. “We call on people to work
together in maintaining the peaceful situation here,” he said.
The lead-up to the Aceh polls has also
been marred by a spate of unresolved shootings and fire-bombings that the House
of Representatives has warned are politically motivated and should not be
treated as normal crimes.
